Kawarau Bridge Bungy is where the world's first commercial bungy jump launched in 1988, and it remains the quintessential New Zealand adrenaline experience. Suspended 43 metres above the churning turquoise Kawarau River, the historic bridge is both a piece of adventure history and a stunning spot to watch jumpers — or take the leap yourself. The surrounding gorge, with its rocky cliffs and willow-lined banks, adds a dramatic natural backdrop that makes the experience unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- The Bungy Jump: Take the plunge from the iconic bridge — you can touch the river, get dunked, or stay dry. The rush is pure Kiwi adrenaline.
- Spectator Platform: Even if you're not jumping, the free viewing platform offers front-row seats to the action and the spectacular gorge scenery.
- The Kawarau River: The milky turquoise water is a result of glacial flour from the Southern Alps — a stunning colour that makes photos pop.
- Historic Bridge: The Kawarau Bridge was built in 1880 for gold miners and is a heritage structure, adding a layer of history to the thrill.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre: The on-site centre has a café with river views, a shop, and a museum-like display of bungy memorabilia and jump stats.
Suggested Time to Spend
Budget about 1 to 1.5 hours for a jump (including check-in, weighing, and the leap itself). Spectators can enjoy the scene in 30–45 minutes, especially if you grab a coffee at the café. If you're combining with other Central Otago activities, a morning or afternoon slot works perfectly — the bridge is just a short detour off State Highway 6.
