Central Otago is New Zealand's southernmost wine region, famed for its world-class Pinot Noir and dramatic landscapes of schist mountains, turquoise lakes, and historic gold-mining towns. The region's cool climate and long autumn days produce intensely flavored wines, best explored on a self-drive loop from Cromwell, Queenstown, or Wanaka. Tastings at cellar doors often come with sweeping vineyard views, and many wineries also run excellent restaurants.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two full days to explore the region's four sub-regions (Gibbston, Bannockburn, Cromwell Basin, and Wanaka). A common itinerary: Day 1 – Cromwell Basin and Bannockburn; Day 2 – Gibbston and Wanaka. If you're short on time, a single day focusing on Bannockburn and Cromwell Basin is rewarding, but you'll miss the diversity. Plan for lunch at one winery and a relaxed tasting pace — most cellar doors are open 10am–5pm.
