Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park, a tranquil lakeside town on the edge of New Zealand's wildest wilderness. With the shimmering Lake Te Anau as its centrepiece and the dramatic peaks of Fiordland rising behind, this is a place where you trade city noise for bird song and star-filled skies. It's the perfect base for exploring Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and the Kepler Track, offering a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe with excellent cafes and a strong Māori cultural presence.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Te Anau & Lakefront Track: Stroll or cycle along the peaceful lakeside path, with stunning views of the Murchison Mountains. In summer, the lake is perfect for kayaking or a scenic cruise.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves: Take a boat trip across the lake to explore limestone caves illuminated by thousands of glowworms – a magical, otherworldly experience.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre: A must-stop for trail info, interactive exhibits on the region's ecology, and insights into Māori legends of the fiords.
- Kepler Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 60 km circuit offers world-class hiking through beech forest, alpine tussock, and along the shores of Lake Manapouri. Day walks like the Key Summit Track are also excellent.
- Milford Sound & Doubtful Sound: Te Anau is the ideal launchpad for day trips to both fiords. Milford is more accessible, while Doubtful offers a wilder, less-crowded experience with a cruise on Lake Manapouri and a coach over Wilmot Pass.
- RealNZ Scenic Cruises: Choose from nature cruises on Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, or a lake cruise to the glowworm caves – all with knowledgeable guides and a dose of local history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Te Anau for 2–3 nights. This allows one day for a Milford Sound trip (including drive time), one day for the Kepler Track or a Doubtful Sound excursion, and a half-day to explore the town and glowworm caves. If you're a keen hiker, add an extra night for a multi-day tramp. The town itself is compact, so you won't need more than a couple of hours to wander its main street and lakefront.
