New Zealand's Kepler Track is a world-renowned Great Walk that delivers a stunning cross-section of Fiordland's dramatic landscapes. This 60-kilometer circuit rewards hikers with alpine vistas, ancient beech forests, and the shimmering expanse of Lake Te Anau. Unlike some other Great Walks, the Kepler is a true loop, meaning you end where you started—perfect for self-drive travellers who don't want to arrange a shuttle. The track is well-formed and marked, but its high alpine sections demand respect and good weather. Whether you're a seasoned tramper or an adventurous day-walker, the Kepler offers an unforgettable journey into New Zealand's wild heart.
Highlights & What to See
- Luxmore Hut to Mount Luxmore summit – The climb above the bushline reveals panoramic views of Lake Te Anau, the Murchison Mountains, and on a clear day, the Tasman Sea.
- Iris Burn Hut and the Iris Burn waterfall – A spectacular cascade plunging into a deep gorge, best appreciated from the swing bridge.
- Broad Bay and the Waiau River – The final stretch along the lake edge offers serene views and a chance to spot native birds like the kea and tui.
- Kepler Track day walks – If you're short on time, the section from Control Gates to Brod Bay makes a rewarding half-day hike through towering red beech forest.
- Sunrise from Mount Luxmore summit – An early start is rewarded with a golden alpenglow over the Fiordland peaks—bring a headlamp and warm layers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the full circuit in 3–4 days, staying at the Department of Conservation huts or campsites. A classic three-day itinerary: Day 1 from Control Gates to Luxmore Hut (5–6 hours), Day 2 over the alpine tops to Iris Burn Hut (6–7 hours), and Day 3 through forest to the Rainbow Reach car park (5–6 hours). If you only have a day, the Control Gates to Brod Bay return walk (about 3 hours) offers a taste of the track's beauty. Book huts and campsites well in advance, especially in summer.
