Omaram Clay Cliffs

Hidden in the rugged landscapes of Central Otago, the Omaram Clay Cliffs are a geological wonder that feels almost otherworldly. These towering, golden-brown pinnacles and ridges, carved by millennia of erosion, rise dramatically from the surrounding farmland, creating a maze of narrow gullies and sharp spires. Unlike the nearby Moeraki Boulders, these formations are entirely natural clay and gravel, offering a stark, desert-like beauty that photographers and hikers will adore. The Cliffs are on private land, but access is permitted via a rough gravel road—a 4WD is recommended after rain. The silence here, broken only by the wind and birds, adds to the sense of discovery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours to fully explore the main formations and take photos. The walk from the car park to the cliffs is short (about 10 minutes), but you’ll want extra time to wander the gullies and find the best angles. If you’re combining with other stops in the Waitaki Valley, a morning or afternoon visit fits neatly into a day’s itinerary.
