Scattered across a private farm in the Waitaki Valley, the Elephant Rocks are a surreal landscape of massive limestone boulders that have been sculpted by wind and water over millions of years. These grey-white formations, many as tall as houses, resemble a herd of elephants frozen mid-stride. The site is a favourite location for film crews (parts of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were shot here) and offers a quiet, otherworldly walk that feels like stepping onto another planet. As you wander among the boulders, the only sounds are birdsong and the rustle of tussock grass – a perfect spot for photography, picnics, and contemplation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to explore the boulders at a leisurely pace. The walk is short (about 1 km loop) but you'll likely want to linger, take photos, and climb around the rocks. Combine with nearby attractions like the Vanished World Centre (allow 30–45 minutes) and the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony (allow 1–2 hours in the evening) for a full day trip from Ōamaru or Omarama.
