Westland National Park is a rugged wilderness of glaciers, rainforest, and dramatic alpine scenery on New Zealand's South Island West Coast. Carved by ancient ice, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers unparalleled access to the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, where you can walk right up to the ice or take a helicopter flight onto the neve. The park's dense temperate rainforest, fed by some of the highest rainfall in the country, is home to unique flora and fauna, while the Southern Alps provide a stunning backdrop. Whether you're a hiker, photographer, or simply seeking awe-inspiring landscapes, Westland delivers raw, untamed beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two full days to experience the highlights: one day for Franz Josef (including a glacier walk and the nearby hot pools) and another for Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson. If you're keen on longer hikes like the Copland Track, add three to four days. The weather can change rapidly, so allow flexibility—helicopter flights and scenic flights often depend on clear skies.
