Hokitika is a ruggedly charming west coast town where the Tasman Sea meets wild river mouths and ancient rainforest. Once a gold-rush port, it's now the creative heart of the West Coast, famous for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, driftwood sculptures on the beach, and the eerie glowworm dell just a few minutes' walk from the main street. The town has a laid-back, artsy vibe, with galleries tucked inside historic wooden buildings and a strong Māori cultural presence.
Highlights & What to See
- Glowworm Dell: A short, easy walk into a damp gully where thousands of glowworms light up the darkness – best seen after dusk.
- Hokitika Gorge: A 30-minute drive takes you to a spectacular turquoise-blue gorge with a swingbridge and short forest walk; the colour is almost unreal.
- National Kiwi Centre: Get up close to live kiwi birds in a nocturnal house, plus tuatara and eels you can feed.
- Beach Driftwood & Sunset: The beach is scattered with giant driftwood sculptures and the sunsets over the Tasman are legendary.
- Pounamu (Greenstone) Workshops: Watch local carvers at work in galleries like Bonz 'n' Stonz or Mountain Jade, and learn about the stone's significance to Ngāi Tahu.
- Hokitika Museum: Housed in the old Carnegie building, it tells the story of the gold rush, Māori history, and the town's wild west heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Hokitika. Arrive in the afternoon, explore the town and beach, visit the glowworm dell after dark, then the next morning head to Hokitika Gorge before continuing north or south. If you're into arts or wildlife, consider an extra half-day.
