Hokitika is a ruggedly charming west coast town where the Tasman Sea meets wild river mouths and ancient rainforest. Once a gold-rush port, it's now the creative heart of the West Coast, famous for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, driftwood sculptures on the beach, and the eerie glowworm dell just a few minutes' walk from the main street. The town has a laid-back, artsy vibe, with galleries tucked inside historic wooden buildings and a strong Māori cultural presence.
