Ross is a tiny gold-mining town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, exuding a quiet, authentic frontier spirit. With a population of just a few hundred, it's the kind of place where you can wander the historic streets, pan for gold in the creek, and feel the echoes of the 1860s gold rush. The town's main attraction is the giant gold nugget found here in 1909 – the 'Honourable Roddy' – and the heritage trail that weaves through old mining sites, a cemetery, and a perfectly preserved pioneer cottage. Ross is a wonderful off-the-beaten-path stop for travellers driving the West Coast, offering a glimpse into New Zealand's rugged past without any touristy fuss.
Highlights & What to See
- Honourable Roddy Nugget: See the replica of the largest gold nugget ever found in New Zealand (weighing 3.09 kg) at the Ross Historic Information Centre. The original is in Wellington, but this replica gives you a sense of the staggering find.
- Ross Historic Walkway: A 1.5-km loop through the town's gold-mining heritage, passing the old jail, a Chinese settlement site, and the cemetery where miners and their families are buried.
- Gold Panning: Try your luck at the designated gold-panning area along Jones Creek. You can rent pans at the information centre, and it's perfectly legal to keep any flakes you find – a genuine hands-on history experience.
- Ross Cemetery: A poignant spot with graves dating back to the 1860s, including those of Chinese miners, a reminder of the multicultural workforce that built the town.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail: Ross is a key trailhead for this 137-km cycle trail that winds through rainforest, along lakes, and over historic trestle bridges. Even if you're not cycling the whole thing, a short ride from Ross is a fantastic way to see the bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Ross is a quick stop – plan for 1 to 2 hours to walk the historic loop and try gold panning. If you're cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail, you might overnight here (there's a basic motel and a camping ground). For most travellers, it's a perfect half-hour detour off State Highway 6, combined with a coffee at the local café and a stroll through the historic streets.
