Perched on the rugged Otago coastline, Nugget Point is one of New Zealand's most dramatic and photogenic landmarks. A short, easy walk leads to a historic lighthouse that gazes out over a cluster of rocky islets (the 'nuggets'), where fur seals and sea lions laze on the rocks and colonies of yellow-eyed penguins and seabirds nest. The raw beauty of this place — crashing waves, wind-sculpted vegetation, and endless ocean horizons — makes it an essential stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- The Nugget Point Lighthouse: Built in 1870, this iconic white tower perches on a narrow promontory. The short, paved walk from the car park (approx. 20 minutes return) offers breathtaking coastal views at every step.
- Wildlife Watching: Bring binoculars to spot New Zealand fur seals and Hooker's sea lions lounging on the rocks below. At dawn and dusk, you might see rare yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho) shuffling ashore.
- Roaring Bay: A short detour from the main track, this sheltered cove has a hide where you can observe penguins without disturbing them (best at sunrise or sunset).
- Coastal Scenery: The drive to Nugget Point itself is stunning, with sweeping views of the Catlins coast. The point is also a superb spot for sunrise photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1–2 hours to fully appreciate Nugget Point. The lighthouse walk is short, but you'll want time to sit and watch the wildlife, especially if you're hoping to spot penguins. Many visitors combine it with a stop at the nearby Cathedral Caves or Purakaunui Falls, making for a half-day exploration of the Catlins.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Cathedral Caves: Enormous sea caves accessible at low tide, about 20 minutes south.
- Purakaunui Falls: A magnificent three-tiered waterfall in native forest, a short walk from the road.
- Waipapa Point: Another scenic lighthouse with a beach where sea lions often rest.
- Curio Bay: Famous for its petrified forest and a good spot for Hector's dolphins.
- Invercargill & Bluff: The nearest city and the southernmost town in the South Island, both about an hour's drive away.
