Nugget Point

Perched on the rugged Otago coastline, Nugget Point is one of New Zealand's most dramatic and photogenic landmarks. A short, easy walk leads to a historic lighthouse that gazes out over a cluster of rocky islets (the 'nuggets'), where fur seals and sea lions laze on the rocks and colonies of yellow-eyed penguins and seabirds nest. The raw beauty of this place — crashing waves, wind-sculpted vegetation, and endless ocean horizons — makes it an essential stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least 1–2 hours to fully appreciate Nugget Point. The lighthouse walk is short, but you'll want time to sit and watch the wildlife, especially if you're hoping to spot penguins. Many visitors combine it with a stop at the nearby Cathedral Caves or Purakaunui Falls, making for a half-day exploration of the Catlins.
