At the very bottom of the South Island, Bluff is a salty, windswept port town that feels like the end of the road – because it is. This is the finish line for State Highway 1, marked by a famous signpost pointing to distances around the world. Bluff is all about big skies, roaring southerlies, and the freshest seafood you'll ever taste, especially its world-renowned Bluff oysters. It’s a place where you come to feel the raw power of the Southern Ocean, wander working wharves, and soak up a genuine, no-frills maritime atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- Stirling Point Signpost: The iconic landmark at the end of SH1 – snap a selfie with the sign showing distances to New York, Tokyo, and the South Pole. It’s the ultimate photo op for road-trippers.
- Bluff Hill / Motupōhue: A short but steep walk (or drive) to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of Foveaux Strait, Stewart Island, and the surrounding coastline. On a clear day, it’s spectacular.
- Bluff Maritime Museum: Dive into the town’s seafaring history, from whaling and shipwrecks to the famous oyster fleet. The centrepiece is a full-sized oyster boat you can walk through.
- Foveaux Walkway: A coastal track that hugs the shoreline from Stirling Point around to the wharves. It’s an easy, windswept stroll with views of the harbour and, if you’re lucky, seabirds and seals.
- Bluff Oyster & Food Festival: If you’re here in May, don’t miss this legendary celebration of the season’s first oysters. Expect shucking competitions, live music, and queues for the freshest bivalves you’ll ever eat.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bluff is a half-day stop, best done as a detour from Invercargill. Arrive by late morning, walk up Bluff Hill, visit the museum, and have a feed of oysters at the iconic Oyster Cove or Fowler’s (the local fish and chip shop). You can easily cover the main sights in 2–3 hours. If you’re a keen walker or photographer, allow a full afternoon to explore the coastal walkway and soak in the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Stewart Island / Rakiura: A ferry from Bluff takes you to New Zealand’s third island, a haven for kiwi spotting, hiking the Rakiura Track, and peaceful, off-grid wilderness. It’s a full-day or multi-day trip.
- The Catlins: A scenic drive east along the Southern Scenic Route leads to rugged coastline, waterfalls, and wildlife like yellow-eyed penguins and sea lions. Highlights include Nugget Point and the Purakaunui Falls.
