Middlemarch, a tiny settlement in the rugged Strath-Taieri region of Otago, is best known as the southern terminus of the Otago Central Rail Trail. This former gold-mining and railway hub now offers a quiet, authentic slice of rural New Zealand, with wide skies, big landscapes, and a warm community feel. It's the perfect place to decompress after a cycling or hiking adventure, or to begin one.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors pass through in a day, either starting or ending a Rail Trail ride. If you're cycling, plan for a 3–5 day trip to cover the full trail comfortably, with an overnight in Middlemarch. Non-cyclists can explore the town and its surrounds in 1–2 hours, but staying overnight is recommended for the stargazing and to soak up the tranquil atmosphere.
