Kepler Track
New Zealand's Kepler Track is a 60-kilometer (37-mile) loop that ranks among the country's Great Walks, offering a stunningly diverse alpine, forest, and lakeside experience. Starting from Lake Te Anau, the track climbs to the open tops of the Kepler Mountains, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of Fiordland's jagged peaks, pristine lakes, and dense beech forests. This is a tramp that demands respect — unpredictable weather, steep climbs, and exposed ridgelines — but rewards with some of the most dramatic scenery in the South Island.
Highlights & What to See
- Luxmore Hut to Mount Luxmore summit: A short but steep side trip from the hut offers 360-degree views of Lake Te Anau, Lake Manapouri, and the surrounding mountains. The sunrise here is unforgettable.
- The Iris Burn Valley: A lush, mossy beech forest section with a swingbridge over the Iris Burn River, and a chance to spot native birds like the mohua (yellowhead) and kaka.
- Mount Luxmore and the alpine ridge: The track spends a full day above the treeline on a rocky, exposed ridge with sheer drops on both sides. This is the Kepler's signature experience — feel the wind and the vastness of Fiordland.
- Lake Manapouri views from the Moturau Hut area: The final stretch along the Waiau River and Lake Manapouri offers calm waters and reflections, a gentle finish after the alpine drama.
- Kepler Track's three huts and campsites: Well-maintained DOC huts (Luxmore, Iris Burn, Moturau) provide basic bunks, cooking facilities, and solar lighting. Book well ahead in peak season.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Kepler Track in 3–4 days, with the standard itinerary being 3 days/2 nights: Day 1 from the Control Gates to Luxmore Hut (5–6 hours), Day 2 over the alpine ridge to Iris Burn Hut (6–7 hours), and Day 3 down to the Rainbow Reach car park (4–5 hours). A 4-day option allows for a more relaxed pace with a side trip to Mount Luxmore summit. The track is well-marked and graded, but you'll need moderate fitness and be prepared for all weather — even in summer, snow and high winds are possible on the tops. Book huts and campsites through DOC's online system well in advance, especially from October to April.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Milford Sound / Piopiotahi: A day trip from Te Anau (2-hour drive) to cruise the iconic fiord with waterfalls, dolphins, and towering cliffs. Combine with the Kepler for a classic Fiordland adventure.
- Doubtful Sound / Patea: A more remote and wild alternative to Milford, accessed via a boat cruise across Lake Manapouri and a bus over Wilmot Pass. A full-day excursion from Te Anau.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves: A short boat trip from Te Anau to explore limestone caves filled with glowworms — a magical evening activity before or after your tramp.
- Routeburn Track: Another Great Walk, starting near Glenorchy, that crosses the Southern Alps from Otago to Fiordland. Combine both tracks for a week of alpine hiking.
- Te Anau town: The gateway to Fiordland, with cafes, restaurants, and the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, where you can get track advice and weather updates.
