With waterfalls, tarns, and sweeping views of the Southern Alps, this 32 km (20 mi) trail delivers a concentrated dose of the country's most dramatic scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers complete the Routeburn Track in 2 to 3 days, either as a through-trek from Routeburn Shelter to The Divide (or vice versa) or as a shorter day walk from the Routeburn Shelter end to Key Summit and back. The full track is 32 km and requires moderate fitness; allow 6–8 hours walking per day. Book hut or campsite spots well in advance, especially in peak season (October to April).
