Striding through ancient beech forest and over alpine passes, the Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks, offering a world-class multi-day tramp between Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks. With waterfalls, tarns, and sweeping views of the Southern Alps, this 32 km (20 mi) trail delivers a concentrated dose of the country's most dramatic scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Key Summit: A side trip from the Divide end, this alpine plateau offers 360-degree views of lakes, mountains, and the Hollyford Valley.
- Harris Saddle (Tarahaka Whakatipu): The highest point on the track at 1,255 m, with a shelter and panoramic views of the Humboldt Mountains.
- Lake Mackenzie: A stunning turquoise lake surrounded by forest and waterfalls, perfect for a rest stop.
- Earland Falls: A 174 m (570 ft) cascade that thunders down a rock face, especially impressive after rain.
- Routeburn Flats: Open grasslands with views of the Humboldt Range, where you might spot kea (alpine parrots).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Routeburn Track in 2 to 3 days, either as a through-trek from Routeburn Shelter to The Divide (or vice versa) or as a shorter day walk from the Routeburn Shelter end to Key Summit and back. The full track is 32 km and requires moderate fitness; allow 6–8 hours walking per day. Book hut or campsite spots well in advance, especially in peak season (October to April).
