Perched on the edge of a dramatic river gorge, the Kawarau Bungy Centre is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Since 1988, thrill-seekers have been leaping from the historic Kawarau Bridge, suspended 43 metres above the turquoise Kawarau River. Even if you’re not jumping, the energy here is infectious—you can watch jumpers from the viewing platform, grab a coffee at the café, and soak in the spectacular surroundings. It’s a quintessential New Zealand adrenaline experience, set against a backdrop of rugged schist cliffs and vine-covered hills.
Highlights & What to See

- Kawarau Jet – Combine your visit with a thrilling jet boat ride that spins and slides along the same river canyon.
- Viewing Platform & Café – Watch jumpers free-fall and rebound while you enjoy a flat white and a bite at the on-site café.
