Thundering through a steep, schist-lined canyon just east of Arrowtown, the Shotover River is the adrenaline spine of the Queenstown region. Its milky-blue, glacier-fed waters have carved a dramatic gorge that delivers world-class jet-boating, rafting, and canyon swinging. Even if you prefer to stay dry, the river’s raw energy and gold-rush history — it was once one of the richest gold-bearing rivers in the world — make it a magnetic stop for any traveller driving the Crown Range or heading toward Skippers Canyon.
Highlights & What to See
- Shotover Jet — The original jet-boat thrill ride, spinning and drenching you through narrow canyon walls at breathtaking speed. It’s the most iconic way to experience the river’s power.
- Shotover Canyon Swing — Not for the faint-hearted: a controlled free-fall and swing that launches you out over the river from a platform 109 metres above the water.
- White-water rafting — Grade 3–5 rapids through the Shotover Gorge, with trips that pass old gold-mining tunnels and towering rock formations.
- Skippers Canyon — A narrow, unsealed road clinging to the canyon wall leads to historic Skippers homestead and gold-mining relics. The drive itself is an adventure (4WD recommended).
- Gold-panning — Try your luck at one of the public panning spots near the Arrowtown end of the river; the Shotover still yields flecks of gold.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors experience the Shotover River as a half-day outing from Arrowtown or Queenstown — a 1–2 hour jet-boat ride or canyon swing is plenty to feel the thrill. If you plan to combine rafting with a drive through Skippers Canyon, set aside a full day. The river is best in the morning when the light hits the gorge walls, and the water is calmest for rafting.
