Shotover River

Thundering through a steep, schist-lined canyon just east of Arrowtown, the Shotover River is the adrenaline spine of the Queenstown region. Its milky-blue, glacier-fed waters have carved a dramatic gorge that delivers world-class jet-boating, rafting, and canyon swinging. Most visitors experience the Shotover River as a half-day outing from Arrowtown or Queenstown — a 1–2 hour jet-boat ride or canyon swing is plenty to feel the thrill. If you plan to combine rafting with a drive through Skippers Canyon, set aside a full day. The river is best in the morning when the light hits the gorge walls, and the water is calmest for rafting.
