Perched on the edge of a dramatic river gorge, the Kawarau Bungy Centre is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Since 1988, thrill-seekers have been leaping from the historic Kawarau Bridge, suspended 43 metres above the turquoise Kawarau River. Even if you’re not jumping, the energy here is infectious—you can watch jumpers from the viewing platform, grab a coffee at the café, and soak in the spectacular surroundings. It’s a quintessential New Zealand adrenaline experience, set against a backdrop of rugged schist cliffs and vine-covered hills.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here. If you’re jumping, allow an hour for check-in, gear-up, and the leap itself. Watching and exploring the site can be done in 30 minutes to an hour. Combine with a visit to nearby Arrowtown or a wine tour for a full day out.
