Imagine a river so vividly turquoise it looks like it's been dyed by a glacier-fed artist. That's Hokitika Gorge, a short but spectacular walk on the West Coast that delivers one of New Zealand's most photogenic natural wonders. The short trail leads you through lush native bush to a swing bridge spanning the gorge, where the milky blue water of the Hokitika River carves through ancient granite. It's a quick, accessible taste of the wild West Coast—and a must for anyone driving the Great Coast Road.
Highlights & What to See
- The turquoise water: The gorge's signature milky-blue hue is caused by glacial flour suspended in the water—best seen on a sunny day when the colour is most intense.
- Swing bridge crossing: The bridge offers heart-thumping views of the gorge below, and is the perfect spot for that iconic photo.
- Short bush walk: The easy 20-minute return track winds through dense podocarp forest, with ferns and mossy boulders along the way.
- Nearby Hokitika town: After the gorge, head into Hokitika for its famous pounamu (greenstone) galleries, wild beach driftwood sculptures, and the excellent Hokitika Museum.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside about 30–45 minutes for the walk and photo stop. It's a perfect quick detour on a drive between Greymouth and Franz Josef—you can easily combine it with a lunch break in Hokitika. If you're feeling adventurous, add an hour to explore the town or walk along the beach.
