Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, cascading from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 300 metres above sea level. This 13-kilometre-long river of ice is a highlight of the West Coast, offering visitors the rare chance to walk on ancient ice without needing mountaineering experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk – A gentle 30-minute walk from the car park to the terminal face viewpoint, passing through lush rainforest and moraine fields with breathtaking views of the ice.
- Heli-hike – Fly by helicopter onto the glacier's mid-section for a guided walk among crevasses, ice caves, and seracs – an unforgettable experience.
- Lake Matheson – Just 6 km from Fox Glacier village, this mirror-still lake offers iconic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, best at sunrise or sunset.
- Fox Glacier Township – A small, friendly base with cafes, a general store, and accommodation, perfect for refuelling after a day on the ice.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes' drive away, with a short walk to a seal colony and historic gold-mining relics.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day at Fox Glacier. Start early with the Glacier Valley Walk (allow 1–2 hours), then book a heli-hike for mid-morning (the full experience takes about 3–4 hours). Afternoon is ideal for Lake Matheson's loop track (1.5 hours) and sunset photos. If you have two days, add Gillespies Beach and a scenic flight over the glacier.
