Stretching from the wild Tasman Sea to the highest peaks of the Southern Alps, Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a raw, dramatic slice of New Zealand's West Coast. Glaciers, rainforest, and rugged coastline collide here, offering some of the country's most accessible ice experiences and untamed wilderness. Whether you're hiking to the terminal face of Franz Josef or kayaking among glacial lakes, this park delivers pure, elemental nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier – Two of the world's most accessible glaciers, with heli-hikes and valley walks offering close-up views of ancient ice.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, best at dawn or dusk.
- Okarito Lagoon – A pristine wetland perfect for kayaking or birdwatching; spot white herons (kotuku) and take the Okarito Trig walk for panoramic views.
- Copland Track to Welcome Flat Hut – A multi-day tramp ending at natural hot pools, with alpine scenery and forest along the way.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild black-sand beach with seal colonies, a historic gold mining area, and a short walk to a sea cave.
- Glacier Viewing Walks – Short, easy tracks like the Sentinel Rock Walk (Fox) or Franz Josef Glacier Walk provide stunning vantage points without a guide.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to experience the park's highlights. Spend one day on the glacier side (Franz Josef or Fox) with a heli-hike or valley walk, and another exploring Lake Matheson, Okarito Lagoon, and the coastal trails. If you're short on time, a single day can cover a glacier walk and a quick stop at Lake Matheson, but you'll miss the depth of the park's landscapes. For multi-day trampers, the Copland Track requires 3–4 days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika – A charming coastal town known for pounamu (greenstone) carving, a vibrant food scene, and the Hokitika Gorge's turquoise waters.
- Haast Pass – Scenic drive through rainforest, waterfalls, and beech forest, linking the West Coast to Wanaka and Central Otago.
- Punakaiki & Pancake Rocks – Iconic limestone formations and blowholes, about a 2.5-hour drive north.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glacier townships – The gateway villages offer accommodation, dining, and glacier tours.
- Whataroa – The departure point for tours to the only mainland kotuku (white heron) breeding colony.
