Alexandra, a sun-drenched town in Central Otago, is the heart of New Zealand's stone fruit region. Perched on the banks of the Clutha River, it's a laid-back base for exploring rugged landscapes, historic gold-mining relics, and vineyards. With more sunshine hours than anywhere else in the country, this is a place where the pace slows and the scenery shines.
Highlights & What to See
- Central Otago Wine Region – Taste world-class Pinot Noir at cellar doors around Alexandra, including vineyards like Black Ridge and Dunstan Road.
- Alexandra Blossom Festival – If you're here in spring, this September celebration of the region's fruit-growing heritage is a riot of colour and community spirit.
- Clutha Gold Trail – Cycle or walk this scenic riverside trail that winds past old gold workings, orchards, and dramatic river gorges.
- Historic Clyde – A short drive away, this charming gold-rush town is packed with heritage buildings, artisan bakeries, and the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail.
- Butcher's Dam & Reservoir – A popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking, with a sandy beach and calm waters.
- Alexandra Mining & Heritage Park – Discover the town's gold-mining past through restored stamper batteries and a historic street scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up Alexandra's relaxed vibe. Spend one day exploring the town and cycling part of the Clutha Gold Trail, another day tasting wine and visiting Clyde, and a third for a longer ride on the Otago Central Rail Trail or a river adventure. If you're short on time, a day trip from Queenstown (1.5 hours' drive) is doable but you'll only scratch the surface.
