Arthurs Pass is a rugged alpine village straddling the Southern Alps, where the road and railway thread through a dramatic gap between the Canterbury Plains and the West Coast. This is a place of thundering waterfalls, ancient beech forests, and kea—the world’s only alpine parrot—that will cheekily inspect your car. It’s a must-stop for hikers, train enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to feel the raw power of New Zealand’s mountainous spine.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors experience Arthurs Pass as a half-day stop on the drive between Christchurch and the West Coast. If you have time, overnighting allows you to tackle a longer hike like the Avalanche Peak track (6–8 hours) or the classic walk to the Otira Valley. For a quick visit, 2–3 hours is enough to see the waterfall, stretch your legs on a short trail, and watch the TranzAlpine pass through.
