Otira is a tiny settlement on the western edge of Arthur's Pass National Park, where the railway and road claw their way through the Southern Alps. It's a place defined by the elements: misty gorges, wild rivers, and the famous Otira Viaduct. For travellers crossing the pass, it's a dramatic pit stop with a rich history of railway engineering and gold mining.
Highlights & What to See
- Otira Viaduct – A soaring concrete bridge that carries State Highway 73 across the deep Otira Gorge. Pull over at the viewing platform to watch the road curve elegantly above the treetops.
- Otira Tunnel – At 8.5 km, it's one of the longest railway tunnels in the Southern Hemisphere. You can't enter, but the historic portal and the tiny Otira railway station are worth a look.
- Otira Gorge – A dramatic, narrow valley with sheer rock faces, waterfalls, and the Otira River roaring below. The short walk from the viaduct car park offers stunning views.
- Kelly's Creek & Otira Valley Track – A gentle, 30-minute walk through beech forest to a swingbridge over the Otira River, with mountain views and birdlife.
- Goat Pass – A challenging but rewarding tramping route from Otira to the Mingha River valley, popular with experienced hikers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Otira is a stopover, not a destination. Allow 30–60 minutes to stretch your legs, photograph the viaduct, and take the short Otira Valley walk. If you're driving from Christchurch to the West Coast, it's a natural break about halfway. For trampers, plan a full day for the Goat Pass circuit.
