Twizel is a small, purpose-built town in the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by turquoise hydro lakes and the dramatic Southern Alps. It's the gateway to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with world-class cycling, hiking, and fishing right on your doorstep.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Twizel itself is compact, but its surroundings demand at least 2–3 days. Spend one day exploring Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (drive or take a shuttle), another cycling or walking the Alps 2 Ocean trail, and a half-day visiting the Clay Cliffs and Lake Pukaki. If you're into fishing or stargazing (the Mackenzie Basin is a Dark Sky Reserve), add an extra night.
