Lake Tekapo is a jaw-dropping slice of alpine perfection in the Mackenzie Basin, famous for its surreal turquoise waters set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The vibrant colour comes from glacial flour suspended in the water, and the scene is crowned by the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, a tiny stone chapel that’s one of the most photographed spots in New Zealand. At night, the lake’s shores become a front-row seat to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, where the Milky Way blazes overhead with breathtaking clarity.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Tekapo deserves at least one full day and night. Arrive early to walk the lakefront and visit the church, then head up to Mount John for lunch and views. Spend the afternoon at Tekapo Springs or exploring the walkway, and stay overnight to experience the Dark Sky Reserve. If you’re combining with Mount Cook, add an extra day for a glacier hike or scenic flight.
