Picton is the gateway to the South Island's stunning Marlborough Sounds, a labyrinth of sunken river valleys filled with emerald water and bush-clad hills. This compact harbour town buzzes with the comings and goings of the Interislander ferry, but beyond the terminal you'll find a relaxed seaside vibe, excellent seafood, and endless opportunities to explore the sounds by boat, kayak, or foot.
Highlights & What to See
- Queen Charlotte Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 70km trail offers jaw-dropping coastal views, native bush, and the chance to spot dolphins and birds. You can walk sections or cycle it.
- Marlborough Sounds Cruise – Take a boat trip from Picton to see remote coves, seal colonies, and the historic Ship Cove where Captain Cook anchored.
- Edwin Fox Maritime Museum – Step aboard the world's oldest surviving merchant sailing ship, a fascinating relic of 19th-century seafaring.
- Picton Foreshore – A lovely waterfront promenade with playgrounds, picnic spots, and views over the harbour. Grab fish and chips from a local takeaway.
- Whale Watching – While Kaikōura is famous for sperm whales, Picton offers year-round tours to see dusky dolphins, seals, and sometimes whales in the sounds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Picton. If you're arriving on the ferry, one night allows you to enjoy a sunset stroll and a seafood dinner. To hike a section of the Queen Charlotte Track or take a full-day cruise, plan for two nights. Picton also works well as a stopover between the North Island and the Marlborough wine region.
