Banks Peninsula juts into the Pacific like a rugged, green thumbprint, its volcanic origins etched into a labyrinth of steep hills, hidden bays, and ancient lava flows. This enchanting region, just a scenic drive from Christchurch, offers a tapestry of coastal walks, wildlife encounters, and French-influenced history. The pace here is unhurried, the air salty, and the views – from the summit of the Peninsula’s many peaks – are nothing short of spectacular.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To truly appreciate Banks Peninsula, dedicate at least two full days. This allows time to explore Akaroa’s heritage, take a dolphin cruise or kayak trip, and tackle a section of the Banks Peninsula Track or a day-walk like the Summit Walk. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Christchurch is feasible but rushed – you’ll only scratch the surface.
