Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, just outside Blenheim in the Marlborough region, is a world-class aviation museum that brings history to life through stunning dioramas and rare aircraft. It’s a must for anyone fascinated by early flight, with a focus on World War I aviation. The centre features two hangars: the original Knight hangar with its dramatic, life-sized scenes of aircraft and pilots in action, and the newer Hangar 2, which houses WWII and later aircraft. The attention to detail is extraordinary — think mud-splattered planes and mannequins in period uniform — making it feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Highlights & What to See
- The Knights of the Sky diorama – a hauntingly realistic display of a crashed German plane in a snow-covered field, complete with a pilot and a farmer’s cart.
- Rare WWI aircraft – including a fully restored Sopwith Camel, Fokker Dr.I triplane and a replica of the Red Baron’s Fokker.
- Hangar 2 – a more modern collection featuring a Spitfire, a P-40 Kittyhawk and a jet-powered de Havilland Vampire.
- Themed exhibitions – from the ‘Birth of the Red Baron’ to ‘The Great Escape’, each telling a compelling story.
- Peter Jackson’s connection – many exhibits are from the film director’s private collection, adding a touch of Hollywood magic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside at least two to three hours to explore both hangars thoroughly. If you’re a keen aviation buff, you could easily spend half a day reading the detailed information panels and admiring the craftsmanship. The centre is a perfect stop on a drive between Kaikōura and Picton, or as part of a day trip from Blenheim.
