Just a short drive north of Kaikōura, Ohau Stream is a magical pocket of native forest where a waterfall-fed pool becomes a seasonal nursery for New Zealand fur seal pups. The short walk through lush bush is enchanting enough, but the chance to see dozens of playful pups splashing in the cool water from July to October makes this an unforgettable stop. The stream tumbles over a rocky ledge into a deep, clear pool surrounded by mossy banks and towering trees — a scene that feels almost prehistoric.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal pup nursery: From winter through early spring, fur seal pups gather in the waterfall pool to play and rest while their mothers forage at sea. Watching them tumble and swim is pure joy.
- Ohau Waterfall: A 10-minute walk through native bush leads to a pretty waterfall cascading into a deep pool. Even without the seals, the walk is beautiful.
- Native birdlife: Keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeon), tūī, and fantails flitting through the canopy.
- Coastal views: The short access road offers sweeping views of the Kaikōura coastline and the Seaward Kaikōura Range.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate about 30 to 45 minutes for the walk and seal viewing. It's a perfect quick stop on a drive between Kaikōura and Blenheim, or as a gentle warm-up activity before a day of whale watching or hiking. The walk is short and easy, suitable for all fitness levels.
