Mount Fyffe Track is a demanding but immensely rewarding day hike that rises steeply from the Kaikōura hinterland to a 1602-metre summit with panoramic coastal and alpine views. The trail climbs through regenerating native bush, across open tussock slopes, and finally to a rocky peak where on a clear day you can see the entire Kaikōura Peninsula, the Seaward Kaikōura Range, and across the Pacific Ocean to the North Island. It's a serious workout – about 6–8 hours return – but the sense of achievement and the vista at the top are unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan a full day: allow 6–8 hours for the return hike (10.5 km each way, 1150 m elevation gain). Start early to avoid afternoon heat and cloud cover, especially in summer. Fit hikers can do it in 5–6 hours, but most people should budget the full day with breaks. It's best as a standalone day trip from Kaikōura town (20-minute drive to the trailhead).
