Mount Cook National Park is a realm of superlatives: New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook, dominates a landscape of glaciers, alpine tarns, and golden tussock grasslands. The air here is crisp, the scale humbling — a place where you feel the ancient power of the Southern Alps. Whether you're a seasoned tramper or a casual day-tripper, the park delivers jaw-dropping vistas at every turn.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook – The country's tallest mountain (3,724 m) is a magnet for climbers and photographers. Catch sunrise reflections on the Hooker Valley Track.
- Tasman Glacier & Tasman Lake – New Zealand's largest glacier, best viewed from the short Tasman Glacier View track. In summer, you can kayak among icebergs.
- Hooker Valley Track – The most popular walk, with swing bridges, alpine meadows, and a stunning view of Mount Cook at the end.
- Kea Point Track – A short, rewarding walk to a viewpoint over Mueller Glacier, with chances to spot cheeky kea parrots.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre – A museum and planetarium celebrating the region's mountaineering history, including Hillary's training here.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least one full day — two if you want to tackle longer hikes like the Mueller Hut Route. Most visitors base themselves in Mount Cook Village and can complete the Hooker Valley Track (3–4 hours return) plus a glacier viewpoint in a day. For a deeper experience, stay overnight at the Hermitage or one of the DOC huts.
