Mangamaunu Bay

Just north of Kaikōura township, Mangamaunu Bay is a wild, windswept stretch of black-sand beach backed by the sheer Seaward Kaikōura Range. The roar of the Pacific meets the whistle of the Southerly here, and on any given day you might spot seals hauled out on the rocks or a pod of dusky dolphins surfing the waves. This is a place to feel the raw energy of New Zealand's coast—bring a jacket, leave the togs behind (the surf is fierce), and simply walk, breathe, and watch the ocean work its magic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half an hour to an hour is plenty for a walk along the beach and a few photos. If you're a keen photographer or whale-watcher, plan for 1–2 hours, especially around sunrise or sunset when the light is best. Mangamaunu Bay works perfectly as a quick stop on the drive between Kaikōura and the Marlborough region—pull over, stretch your legs, and soak in the view before continuing your journey.
