Lake Matheson, a mirror-still glacial lake near Fox Glacier on New Zealand's West Coast, offers one of the country's most iconic reflections: the perfect mirrored images of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The lake is set in ancient kahikatea swamp forest, and the short loop walk is a must-do for photographers, hikers, and anyone seeking serene natural beauty. The best time to visit is early morning or late evening when the water is glassy and the mountains are bathed in alpenglow.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate 1.5–2 hours for the walk and photo stops. If you're a keen photographer, allow an extra hour for sunrise or sunset shots. The walk is flat and easy, so it's a perfect morning or afternoon excursion, and can be combined with a visit to Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier on the same day.
