Fox Glacier is a dramatic river of ice that descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, one of the few glaciers in the world that reaches such low altitudes. The views are staggering – from the terminal face to the blue crevasses and seracs – and the experience is both humbling and exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk: A short, easy walk from the car park to the terminal face viewpoint, offering close-up views of the ice and the milky meltwater river.
- Heli-Hike: For an unforgettable experience, take a helicopter onto the nevé and walk on the glacier with a guide – you'll explore ice caves, crevasses, and pristine snowfields.
- Lake Matheson: Just a short drive away, this mirror-like lake reflects Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks, especially stunning at dawn or dusk.
- Ōkārito Lagoon: A tranquil coastal wetland with walking trails and birdlife, including the rare white heron/kōtuku.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, rugged beach where you can see the glacier's moraine meeting the Tasman Sea, and sometimes seals basking on the rocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the glacier and nearby attractions. The glacier valley walk takes about 1–2 hours round trip; a heli-hike adds 2–4 hours. Add another 1–2 hours for Lake Matheson (allow for the loop walk) and you’ll have a packed but rewarding day. If you want to do both a heli-hike and leisurely explore the area, consider staying two nights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier: Only 23 km north, this similarly impressive glacier offers its own walks and heli-hikes, plus the Glacier Hot Pools for a relaxing soak.
- Whale Watching: Head north to Kaikōura for world-class whale watching and dolphin encounters – a perfect contrast to the glacier scenery.
- Peninsula Walkway: In Kaikōura, this coastal walk offers stunning views, seal colonies, and seabird spotting, ideal for a half-day trip.
- West Coast Glaciers Scenic Drive: The road between Fox and Franz Josef weaves through lush rainforest and past dramatic mountain vistas – allow time for photo stops.
