One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Heaphy Track is an epic 78.4 km journey through the diverse landscapes of Kahurangi National Park. From the lush, moss-draped forests of the west coast to the golden tussock of the inland hills and the palm-fringed beaches of the Tasman Sea, this multi-day hike is a feast for the senses. You'll cross swingbridges, soak in natural hot springs, and spot rare birds like the kea and weka. It's a true wilderness adventure that rewards with stunning variety.
Highlights & What to See
- West Coast Forests: Walk through ancient podocarp forests with giant rimu and kahikatea trees, ferns, and vibrant mosses.
- Gouland Downs: A surreal, open landscape of limestone pavements and tussock, with views of the distant mountains.
- Heaphy River & Hot Springs: Take a dip in the natural hot pools near the Heaphy River hut – a perfect reward after a long day.
- Kōhaihai Beach: The track ends at this stunning golden-sand beach, where you can spot seals and dolphins.
- Birdlife: Look out for kea (mountain parrots), weka, and the rare blue duck (whio).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers take 4 to 6 days to complete the full track, with nights spent in Department of Conservation huts or campsites. You can also cycle the track in 2 to 3 days (mountain bike season is winter only). Plan for a full day of travel to and from the trailheads, as the track is one-way and requires transport connections.
