Sealy Tarns Track is a steep but rewarding hike that climbs from the Hermitage Hotel area up to two small alpine tarns with jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks. The track is a classic for those wanting a challenging half-day walk that delivers big mountain scenery without the commitment of a full alpine route.
Highlights & What to See
- Unobstructed views of Aoraki/Mount Cook – the tarns provide a perfect mirror reflection of the mountain on calm days, making for iconic photo opportunities.
- Alpine wildflowers in summer – the track is lined with Mount Cook buttercups and other alpine flora, adding colour to the rocky terrain.
- Glacial valleys and peaks – from the tarns, you can look across the Hooker Valley and see the Mueller Glacier, Mount Sefton, and the Footstool.
- Birdlife – keep an eye out for kea, New Zealand's alpine parrot, which is often seen around the tarns.
- Fitness challenge – with roughly 600 metres of elevation gain over 2.2 kilometres, the track is a solid workout with a big payoff.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3–4 hours return for the walk itself, plus extra time to sit at the tarns and soak in the views. Start early in the day to avoid afternoon cloud cover that can obscure the peaks, and to enjoy quieter conditions on the track. The best months are November to March when the track is free of snow and the weather is most stable.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hooker Valley Track – an easier, flat walk through the Hooker Valley with swing bridges and close-up glacier views, perfect for a second day.
- Tasman Glacier View Track – a short walk to a viewpoint over the Tasman Glacier and its terminal lake, with icebergs often floating in the water.
- Mueller Hut Route – for experienced alpine hikers, this route continues above Sealy Tarns to Mueller Hut, offering overnight accommodation and even more spectacular scenery.
- Aoraki/Mount Cook Village – explore the visitor centre, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, and the village's short nature walks.
