In the shadow of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier form a starkly beautiful landscape of ice, rock, and turquoise meltwater. The short walk to the Blue Lakes offers a striking contrast between the milky blue ponds and the debris-covered tongue of New Zealand's longest glacier. It's a must-do for anyone exploring the Mackenzie Country.
Highlights & What to See
- Blue Lakes Lookout: A short, easy walk leads to a viewpoint over three small, vividly turquoise lakes, formed by glacial moraine. The colour is stunning on a sunny day.
- Tasman Glacier View: Continue to the Tasman Glacier lookout for a panorama of the massive ice river, its terminal lake dotted with icebergs. Listen for the rumble of calving ice.
- Tasman Glacier Lake Boat Tour: For an up-close experience, join a guided boat trip among the icebergs on the terminal lake (seasonal).
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre: Located at the village, it provides excellent exhibits on the region's geology and mountaineering history.
- Hooker Valley Track: One of New Zealand's best day hikes, crossing swing bridges to a hut with epic views of Aoraki. Start early to avoid crowds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to fully appreciate the area. The Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier walks take about 1–2 hours combined. Add another 3–4 hours if you want to tackle the Hooker Valley Track. For boat tours, plan an extra 2–3 hours. If you're short on time, a quick stop at the Blue Lakes lookout is still rewarding.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Aoraki/Mount Cook Village: The hub for accommodation, dining, and trailheads, just 10 minutes' drive from the Blue Lakes car park.
- Lake Pukaki: The stunning turquoise lake on the road to Mount Cook, with iconic views of Aoraki. Stop at the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon shop for a snack.
- Twizel: A handy base with supermarkets and cafes, 30 minutes south. Also the starting point for the Ohau Skifield and hydro canals.
- Omarama: Known for clay cliffs and hot pools, about 45 minutes south. A good spot to break the journey.
- Tekapo: Famous for the Church of the Good Shepherd and star-gazing, about 1 hour north. Combine with a soak at Tekapo Springs.
