Hanmer Springs is a compact alpine village that packs a punch for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by the pristine forests and rivers of the Hanmer Range, it's a year-round playground where you can soak in thermal pools after a day of mountain biking, hiking, or jet boating. The village vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with a handful of cafes and pubs perfect for refueling between adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa – The iconic geothermal complex with multiple pools, sulphur springs, and a water slide. Perfect for unwinding after a day of activity.
- Mountain Biking at the Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike Park – Over 50 km of trails ranging from beginner-friendly green runs to advanced black diamond descents. The park is free to use and well-maintained.
- Hiking in the Hanmer Forest – A network of walking tracks, including the popular Conical Hill Walk (1-hour return) offering panoramic views of the village and mountains, and the longer Mt Isobel Track (5-6 hours) for a full-day challenge.
- Jet Boating on the Waiau River – Thrill-seekers can take a high-speed jet boat ride through narrow canyons and shallow braided rivers. Several operators offer trips from the village.
- Horse Trekking – Guided horse rides through the forest and river valleys, suitable for all experience levels. A great way to explore the backcountry.
- Bungee Jumping – Take the plunge from the historic Hanmer Springs Bungee platform (43 metres) over the Waiau River. One of the original bungee sites in New Zealand.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two to three days to fully experience the range of outdoor activities. A typical itinerary: Day 1 – arrive, hike Conical Hill in the afternoon, then relax in the thermal pools. Day 2 – mountain bike the park or take a jet boat ride. Day 3 – horse trek or bungee jump before heading off. If you're short on time, a full day can cover one major activity plus the pools, but you'll likely want to stay longer.
