Okarito Lagoon is a serene coastal wetland on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, just north of Franz Josef Glacier. This vast, shallow lagoon is a haven for birdlife, including the rare white heron (kotuku), and offers some of the most tranquil kayaking and walking experiences in the region. The village of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, adds a touch of local charm.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is enough to explore the lagoon by kayak or take the Trig walk. If you add a white heron tour (seasonal, Sept–Jan) or the Three Mile Pack Track, plan for a full day. Most visitors combine Okarito with a stopover in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier.
