Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, a tongue of ancient ice that descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. Unlike many glaciers worldwide, Fox is still advancing, and its terminal face is just a short walk from the car park. The contrast of white ice against lush native bush is surreal, and the constantly shifting ice creates a landscape that feels alive. Whether you view it from a distance or step onto the ice with a guide, Fox Glacier offers an unforgettable encounter with nature's raw power.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Viewpoint walks: Several short, well-maintained tracks lead to viewpoints of the terminal face. The Fox Glacier South Side Walk (20 minutes) and the longer River Walk (1 hour) offer excellent perspectives.
- Heli-hikes: For an up-close experience, guided heli-hikes land you on the ice where you can explore crevasses, ice caves, and blue pools with a trained guide.
- Lake Matheson: A 15-minute drive away, this mirror lake offers iconic reflections of Fox Glacier and Mount Cook on calm days. The easy 1.5-hour loop walk is a must.
- Fox Glacier township: A small settlement with cafes, a pub, and souvenir shops, perfect for refueling after glacier adventures.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild black-sand beach 20 minutes west, where you can see the glacier's terminal face from the sea and spot seals.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day to experience the glacier properly. Start with the morning viewpoint walks, then book a heli-hike (allow 3–4 hours). In the afternoon, drive to Lake Matheson for a peaceful walk and sunset reflections. If you're short on time, a half-day can cover the viewpoint walks and a quick visit to the lake, but you'll miss the ice experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Okarito Lagoon: A stunning coastal wetland 30 km north, great for kayaking, birdwatching (including white herons), and the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.
- Haast Pass: The scenic drive south through Haast Pass leads to the rugged West Coast and the start of the Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Mount Cook National Park: A 2.5-hour drive east via the Haast Pass, this is a must for alpine scenery, with the Tasman Glacier and Hooker Valley Track.
