Mount Herman Track
Mount Herman Track, a demanding but rewarding day hike near Hanmer Springs, offers sweeping views over the alpine landscape of North Canterbury. This trail climbs steadily through mountain beech forest and subalpine scrub to the summit of Mount Herman (1788 m), where you’re met with a 360-degree panorama of the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Amuri Basin, and the distant Pacific Ocean. It’s a classic backcountry experience that feels a world away from the thermal pools below.
Highlights & What to See
- The Summit Ridge – The final push above the bushline is exhilarating, with tussock-covered slopes and rock outcrops framing the skyline. On a clear day, the view stretches from the Kaikōura Peninsula to the Southern Alps.
- Alpine Flora – In summer, the track is lined with mountain daisies, hebes, and the iconic Mount Cook lily (actually a giant buttercup). Keep an eye out for kea, New Zealand’s cheeky alpine parrot.
- Historic Molesworth Station – From the summit, you can look across the vast Molesworth Station, one of the country’s largest high-country sheep stations, with a rich history dating back to the 1850s.
- Hanmer Springs – The track starts just outside this charming alpine village, famous for its hot pools and outdoor activities. Soaking in the thermal waters post-hike is a quintessential treat.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the Mount Herman Track: the return journey covers about 16 km and typically takes 6–8 hours, depending on fitness and conditions. Start early to avoid afternoon winds and to allow time for summit lingering. The track is steep and unrelenting in places, so pack plenty of water, food, and layers. Most hikers tackle it between November and April when snow is less likely, but always check the forecast before setting out.
