Kaikōura is a dramatic stretch of coastline where the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges straight into the Pacific Ocean, creating one of New Zealand's most stunning marine playgrounds. This small town is world-famous for its sperm whale watching, fur seal colonies, and the chance to swim with dusky dolphins—all set against a backdrop of snowy peaks. The recent highway upgrades make it an easy, scenic detour on the drive between Christchurch and Picton.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 full days in Kaikōura. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, allow one day for a whale-watching tour and the peninsula walk, plus a second day for dolphin swimming or a scenic flight. The town is compact, so you can easily fit in a seafood lunch and a walk to the seal colony in a half-day stopover, but the full experience deserves at least one overnight stay.
