Hokitika Town

Hokitika is a ruggedly charming West Coast town where gold-rush history meets wild Tasman Sea beaches. The air smells of salt and fresh-cut pounamu (greenstone), and the main street is lined with quirky galleries and fish-and-chip shops. It's the gateway to the glaciers but worth a stop in its own right for its raw coastal beauty and artisan spirit.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a night or a full day. Arrive early to do the Gorge walk (30 min drive from town) in the morning, then explore town, the Kiwi Centre, and the beach by afternoon. If you're driving the West Coast, Hokitika is a perfect lunch or overnight stop between Greymouth and Franz Josef.
