Few places on Earth let you walk on ancient ice without needing to be a mountaineer. The Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers cascade down from New Zealand's Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a surreal landscape where snow and ice meet lush greenery. This is one of the planet's most accessible glacial environments, and a must-see on any South Island itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Glacier Walks – Strap on crampons and follow an expert guide onto the ice. Franz Josef's walk is longer and more challenging; Fox's is slightly shorter but equally breathtaking. Both offer crevasses, ice caves, and blue-hued seracs.
- Heli-Hikes – For a bird's-eye view, a scenic helicopter flight lands you high on the nevé, where the ice is pristine and the surrounding peaks (including Aoraki/Mount Cook) are staggering.
- Lake Matheson – Just a short drive from Fox Glacier, this dark-water lake perfectly reflects the glacier and the alps. The easy loop walk is best at sunrise or sunset for mirror-like reflections.
- Franz Josef Village & Hot Pools – After a day on the ice, soak tired muscles in the Glacier Hot Pools, surrounded by native bush. The village also has a handful of good cafes and a small museum.
- Okarito Lagoon – A coastal wetland near Franz Josef, famous for its birdlife (including the rare white heron/ kotuku). Kayak or take a boat tour to explore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal – one full day for a glacier walk or heli-hike, and a second to explore the surrounding rainforest and lakes. If you're short on time, a single long day can cover a heli-hike and a quick visit to Lake Matheson, but you'll miss the chance to linger. Plan to overnight in either Fox or Franz Josef village (they're 23 km apart) to avoid rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- West Coast Glaciers Scenic Drive – The road between the glaciers (State Highway 6) is a stunning coastal route with viewpoints over the Tasman Sea and lush hills.
- Hokitika – A quirky gold-rush town with jade workshops, a wild beach, and the famous Hokitika Gorge (brilliant turquoise water).
- Arthur's Pass National Park – A dramatic mountain pass with short walks to waterfalls and alpine views, about 2.5 hours south-east.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks – Just north of Hokitika, these layered limestone formations and blowholes are a classic West Coast stop.
- Wanaka – A scenic 2-hour drive over the Haast Pass leads to this lakeside town, gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park.
