Craigieburn Forest Park is a rugged alpine playground straddling the Southern Alps, about 90 minutes northwest of Christchurch. This is New Zealand at its most raw: beech forests cling to steep valleys, braided rivers tumble over rocky beds, and the iconic Craigieburn Range offers some of the best day walks and ski touring in the South Island. The park feels wonderfully remote yet is easily accessed via the scenic Highway 73, making it a perfect detour between Christchurch and the West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Craigieburn Valley Ski Area – A classic club field with steep terrain, a historic nutcracker rope tow, and stunning views over the Waimakariri River. Perfect for experienced skiers and snowboarders in winter.
- Castle Hill (Kura Tāwhiti) – Just south of the park, this surreal landscape of limestone boulders is a must-stop for photographers and climbers. The short walk among the rock formations is otherworldly.
- Broken River Ski Area – Another club field known for its uncrowded slopes and friendly vibe. The access road is an adventure in itself.
- Craigieburn Forest Park walking tracks – The Craigieburn Loop Track (3–4 hours) winds through ancient red beech forest and alpine meadows, while the Lyndon Saddle Track offers panoramic views of the Southern Alps.
- Waimakariri River – Jet-boat tours and fishing trips operate on this braided river, offering a thrilling way to experience the park’s wild heart.
- Puzzle World – A quirky attraction in nearby Wanaka? No, actually in the small settlement of Arthur's Pass Village (just north) you'll find the Otira Viaduct Lookout and the start of the Goat Pass Track, a classic tramping route.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to appreciate Craigieburn Forest Park. If you're driving from Christchurch to the West Coast, a half-day stop for a short walk and Castle Hill is worthwhile, but overnighting in nearby Arthur's Pass or Springfield allows you to tackle a longer hike or enjoy the club ski fields in winter. For trampers, the 2–3 day Craigieburn Traverse is a highlight.
