Castle Hill is a surreal landscape of massive limestone boulders scattered across a grassy hillside, like the ruins of an ancient fortress. Located about 90 minutes from Hanmer Springs, this natural wonder is a favorite for photographers, climbers, and anyone who appreciates otherworldly scenery. The area is also known as Kura Tawhiti, a site of cultural significance to Ngāi Tahu, and was used as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia.
Highlights & What to See
- Limestone Boulders: Wander among the giant, sculpted rocks that seem to defy gravity. The formations are especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the light casts dramatic shadows.
- Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area: Explore the broader area, which includes Māori rock art sites and a short walking track through the boulder field.
- Bouldering and Climbing: Castle Hill is a world-class bouldering destination, with over 2,000 problems for climbers of all levels. Even if you don't climb, watching others scale the rocks is impressive.
- Flocks of Sheep: The surrounding farmland often has sheep grazing, adding to the pastoral charm.
