Castle Hill is a surreal landscape of massive limestone boulders scattered across a grassy hillside, like the ruins of an ancient fortress. Located about 90 minutes from Hanmer Springs, this natural wonder is a favorite for photographers, climbers, and anyone who appreciates otherworldly scenery. The area is also known as Kura Tawhiti, a site of cultural significance to Ngāi Tahu, and was used as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours to fully appreciate the boulder field and take photos. If you're a climber, you could easily spend half a day or more. Castle Hill is a perfect stop on a drive between Hanmer Springs and Arthur's Pass, so you can combine it with a longer road trip.
