Hanmer Forest is a sprawling network of walking and biking trails set against the dramatic backdrop of the Amuri Range. This is where you come to stretch your legs after soaking in the thermal pools — or to earn a second soak. The forest smells of pine and damp earth, and the trails range from gentle riverside strolls to lung-busting climbs with views that stretch to the Southern Alps.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ideal: spend 2–3 hours on a hike or bike ride, then reward yourself with an hour or two at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa. If you're keen to explore multiple trails, you could easily fill a full day. The forest is accessible year-round, but trails can be muddy after rain — bring sturdy shoes.
