Amuri Bluff
Perched on the rugged Kaikōura coast, Amuri Bluff is a dramatic headland where the bush-clad hills of the Inland Kaikōura Range meet the wild Pacific Ocean. This is a place of raw natural beauty, rich in Māori history and early European whaling heritage. The short but steep walk to the bluff rewards with sweeping views over the ocean and the chance to spot seals, dolphins, and migrating whales. It’s a perfect half-day escape from Hanmer Springs for those craving coastal solitude and a sense of deep time.
Highlights & What to See
- Amuri Bluff Walk: A 30-minute return climb through regenerating native bush to a historic lighthouse site. The track is steep in places but offers breathtaking views of the coastline and, on clear days, the Kaikōura Ranges.
- Whaling History: Look for remnants of the old whaling station and try to imagine the bustling 19th-century industry that once operated here. Interpretive signs tell the story.
- Coastal Wildlife: Bring binoculars to scan for New Zealand fur seals basking on the rocks, Hector’s dolphins playing in the surf, and occasional southern right whales passing by during winter.
- Photography: The contrast between the green headland, blue ocean, and white surf crashing against the bluff makes for stunning photos, especially at golden hour.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can comfortably explore Amuri Bluff in 1–2 hours, including the walk and time to soak in the views. It’s best done as a half-day trip from Hanmer Springs (45 minutes drive) or as a stop on the scenic route between Kaikōura and Hanmer.
